The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) is formally requesting increased funding to bolster the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining within the country. During a recent press conference held in Uyo, the President of the society, Prof. Akinade Olatunji, articulated the critical need for adequate resources and well-trained personnel to address the pervasive issue.
Illegal mining has had a profound impact on Nigeria’s economy and environment, prompting Prof. Olatunji to emphasize the imperative of taking proactive measures to prevent further harm. He underscored the necessity of equipping federal mines offices with the essential vehicles and personnel required to access remote areas where illegal mining activities are prevalent.
The president highlighted the geographical challenges associated with the issue, noting that illegal mining often occurs in areas with limited transportation and infrastructure access. Consequently, Prof. Olatunji stressed the essential role of qualified and motivated personnel in effectively monitoring and regulating these activities. Regrettably, many mines offices are presently burdened with inadequate staffing levels and insufficient resources needed to fulfil their duties.
Prof. Olatunji advocated for an increase in the staffing levels of the mining inspectorate units, proposing separate and reflective salary scales for personnel in this unit. He emphasized the paramount importance of proper oversight and adequate funding to effectively curb the prevalence of illegal mining activities in the country.
Expressing staunch disapproval of illegal mining, the president cited its detrimental impact on national revenue, employment opportunities, and the environment. He cautioned that if left unchecked, illegal mining will perpetuate vast wastelands unsuitable for other purposes.
In addition to addressing illegal mining, Prof. Olatunji cautioned against indiscriminate borehole drilling due to its severe environmental consequences. He clarified that borehole drilling is not linked to earthquakes, dispelling any prevailing fears to the contrary.
The NMGS’s plea for increased funding and resources to address illegal mining in Nigeria underscores the urgent nature of the issue. It is essential for the government to acknowledge the severity of the problem and take decisive action to support the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining. By providing appropriate funding and staffing for the mining offices, the government can manifest its commitment to preserving the nation’s economy, environment, and natural resources.
The NMGS’s appeal serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing illegal mining to safeguard Nigeria’s economic and environmental welfare. It is imperative for the government to heed this call and allocate the necessary resources to effectively combat this pressing issue.
