Enhancing Legal Expertise: NBA-ICLE Kaduna Branch Hosts Mining Law Training

The Nigerian Bar Association, Kaduna Branch, recently hosted an intensive training session focusing on mining law and practice at the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation. The event drew over 300 lawyers from various NBA branches across the country.

Two distinguished experts in the field led the training. Prof. Peter Terkaa Akper, PhD, SAN, OFR, a renowned authority on mining law in Nigeria, served as the lead facilitator. His presentation explored the complexities and current trends in mining law, equipping attendees with valuable insights and practical knowledge on crucial aspects of mining regulations and legal frameworks in Nigeria.

Additionally, Olatunji Muritala, a partner at The LawCrest LLP, led a focused discussion on mining contract clauses, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of essential clauses in mining contracts, complete with detailed explanations and sample clauses demonstrating effective drafting techniques.

This initiative, spearheaded by Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the NBA-ICLE, aimed to address a pressing need within the legal profession, particularly in Northern Nigeria. Erojikwe explained, “We had seen a significant increase in commercial mining activities around northern Nigeria, and the companies involved require lawyers who understand the industry to advise them. However, the capacity to deliver this expertise is lacking, prompting clients to seek legal advice elsewhere. This training was conducted to equip participating lawyers with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle mining and mining law matters.”

Expressing gratitude, Erojikwe thanked the facilitators and participants and the Nigerian Bar Association, Kaduna Branch, led by Godwin Ochai, and the Law Week Planning Committee led by Baba Lawal Aliyu, FCIArb (UK).

Baba Lawal Aliyu, FCIArb, in his closing remarks, thanked the NBA-ICLE for organising the event and acknowledged the facilitators for their well-presented sessions, as well as the participants for their active engagement.

The training received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants, with many describing it as “deep” and an “eye-opener into a new area of the law”, praising ICLE and Tobenna Erojikwe for bringing such training to Northern Nigeria.

This successful event exemplifies the NBA-ICLE’s dedication to providing relevant and high-quality continuing legal education, especially in emerging areas of practice like mining law. It also underscores the importance of tailoring training initiatives to meet the specific needs of different regions across Nigeria.
