Crackdown on Illegal Mining: Chinese Nationals Face Nigerian Court

The Nigerian government has taken a significant step in its fight against illegal mining by bringing a group of Chinese nationals to court for engaging in unlawful mining activities in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

The suspects, comprising eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian, were recently detained by the Mining Marshals, an elite security unit established by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). They were presented before Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, where the prosecution filed a three-count charge of illegal mining and obstruction of lawful mining operations, among others.

The defendants, including entities such as WANDA COMPANY LIMITED, were detained at Kuje Correctional Centre until the adjourned date for the continuation of the trial. This development is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to eradicating the unlawful exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources.

About the Mining Marshals
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, conceptualized the idea of the Mining Marshals, also known as “Operation Hayakin Kogo,” as a critical element of his seven-point agenda to clean up the mining sector. The marshals, led by ACC John Onoja, are tasked with the responsibility of eliminating illegal mining activities across the country.

Furthermore, the minister is dedicated to strengthening the operations of the Mining Marshals through the deployment of advanced technology and additional equipment. This strategic move aims to ensure that Nigeria fully maximizes the benefits of its abundant mineral resources.
