The enforcement of regulations against illicit mining in Nigeria has taken a major stride as the federal government has brought charges against eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian for their involvement in illegal mining activities in the Lokpaukwu community, Umuchieze, Abia State. The apprehension of these individuals was made by the Mining Marshals, an elite security unit established by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Segun Tomori, a special assistant on media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, stressed the dedication of the Marshals to eliminating unlawful operations within the mining sector. Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, initiated the creation of the Mining Marshals as part of his 7-point agenda to cleanse the mining environment.
The trial of the suspects commenced before Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The prosecution leveled a 3-count charge, including mining without lawful authority and obstruction of lawful mining operations, among other allegations. The defendants, comprising of eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian, have been remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until the adjourned date for the continuation of the trial.
Under the leadership of ACC John Onoja, the Mining Marshals, a 2,570-strong force, are dedicated to eradicating the illicit activities of criminal syndicates in mining areas throughout the country. ACC John Onoja highlighted the Minister’s commitment to enhancing the operations of the Mining Marshals through the integration of technology and the provision of additional equipment to ensure the nation maximises the benefits from its mineral resources.
