The Arrest of 8 Chinese and a Nigerian for Illegal Mining in Abia

The Federal Government has made significant progress in its efforts to combat illegal mining, as evidenced by the recent arraignment of numerous Chinese and Nigerian nationals for engaging in illegal mining activities in Lokpaukwu community, Umuchieze, within Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

A statement from the Special Assistant to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Segun Tomori, reported that the suspects, consisting of eight (8) Chinese nationals and one Nigerian, were apprehended by the Mining Marshals, an elite security outfit established from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The Mining Marshals have been assigned the crucial task of eradicating illegal operators in the mining sector.

The initiative, titled “Operation Hayakin Kogo,” was launched by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, as part of his comprehensive 7-point agenda to cleanse the mining environment. This initiative plays a pivotal role in the government’s campaign against illegal mining.

The suspects were formally charged before Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The prosecution filed a 3-count charge against them, including mining without lawful authority and obstruction of lawful mining operations. The accused individuals are Shen Yongchan, Mo Baixian, Xiao Bin, Huang Xu Fa, Ma Bingli, Yang Jian, Li Peiyin, Que Wengyong, Hiyk Edward Desmond, and Wanda Company Limited.

Following the pleas and arguments from both sides, the defendants have been remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until the adjourned date for the continuation of the trial.

Led by ACC John Onoja, the Mining Marshals consist of 2,570 personnel dedicated to eradicating the criminal activities of syndicates in mining areas across the country. The Minister is committed to enhancing the operations of the Mining Marshals through the integration of technology and additional equipment to ensure that the nation fully benefits from its mineral resources.

These efforts demonstrate the government’s unwavering dedication to curbing illegal mining activities and ensuring that the mining sector operates within the confines of the law. It sends a resounding message to both local and foreign individuals involved in illegal mining that such activities will not be tolerated.
