Nigerian Mining Company Teams Up with South African Investor to Establish State-of-the-Art Lithium Plants

In the pursuit of advancing the mining sector’s agenda, Jupiter Lithium Limited, a local mining firm, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bevex Mining Services, a South African mining giant, to establish modular plants for the exploration and processing of lithium. The primary aim of this partnership is to tap into the abundant spodumene deposits in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, and transform them into premium Spodumene Concentrate (SC6) for the production of batteries.

The MOU, referred to as the “Jupiter Project,” involves an initial three-month scoping study to determine the feasibility of the project, which will include drilling and metallurgical test work. This will ultimately lead to the design finalisation of the process plant.

Dr. Hassan Tukur, representing the local investor, expressed the significance of this partnership, stating that it marks a crucial collaboration between Nigeria and South Africa in the utilisation of advanced lithium processing technology. He emphasised that it is aligned with their mission to enhance Nigeria’s mining sector and promote local employment. Additionally, he highlighted the expertise that the South African firm will bring to the project, particularly in utilising Dense Media Separation (DMS) technology for the creation of modular process plants.

Dave Griffiths, the Chief Executive Officer of Bevex Mining Services, affirmed the company’s dedication to local development and environmental sustainability as the foundation of their operations. He also explained the benefits of the DMS technology, emphasising its role in reducing transport costs and minimising community disruption.

Furthermore, Dr. Stephen Davis, Director of Jupiter Lithium Ltd., expressed his optimism about the impact of the partnership on the development of the lithium processing industry in Nigeria. He noted that the collaboration with Bevex will set a new standard for lithium processing in the country and contribute significantly to meeting global lithium demands while fostering local industry growth.

The Kaduna State government also expressed its support for the partnership, promising to provide the necessary assistance for the successful establishment of the modular plants. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Buba, conveyed the state government’s warm welcome and emphasised the substantial benefits that this collaboration promises for the development of the state.

This collaborative effort between Jupiter Lithium Limited and Bevex Mining Services heralds a major advancement in the mining sector and holds the potential to significantly elevate Nigeria’s position in the global lithium market. With a focus on advanced technology, environmental sustainability, and local economic growth, this partnership is poised to bring about transformative changes in the industry.
