The Federal Government of Nigeria has recently taken decisive action to close an illegal gold mine in the Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State. This action is part of the government’s strategic efforts to combat illegal mining and revitalize the mining sector in order to enhance Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, emphasized the government’s dedication to eliminating illegal mining activities that have impeded the lawful exploitation of the country’s mineral resources. The operation was carried out by the Mining marshals in Iyeh Odogbe, Isanlu community of Yagba East LGA.
According to the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, the illegal miners had been preventing licensed miners from accessing the site for 16 years. Additional reports indicated that the illicit activities had been ongoing for over two decades.
As a result of the government’s intervention, seven suspects leading various groups of illegal miners were apprehended during the operation. The site workers were given five days to vacate the premises, as the government intends to secure the area and facilitate its recovery for legitimate mining activities.
This decisive action aligns with the Federal Government’s recent announcement regarding the arrest of eight Chinese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in Abia State. The government is demonstrating its unwavering determination to enforce mining laws and regulations, irrespective of the perpetrators’ nationality.
By cracking down on illegal mining, Nigeria aims to streamline the mining sector, attract foreign investment, and create employment opportunities for its citizens. The country is blessed with abundant mineral resources, and proper regulation of the mining industry is crucial for sustainable economic growth and development.
In conclusion, the closure of the illegal gold mine in Kogi State is a testament to the Nigerian government’s commitment to promoting lawful mining activities and ensuring that the country’s mineral resources are utilized for the benefit of all stakeholders. This proactive measure will undoubtedly contribute to enhancing Nigeria’s economic profile and bolstering its position in the global mining industry.
