Nigeria Launches ‘Mining Marshals’ Initiative to Curb Illegal Mining

The Nigerian federal government launched Mining Marshals under the NSCDC to combat illegal mining, with 60 personnel per state. Minister Tunji-Ojo highlighted resource protection, and CG Ahmed Audi reported over 1,175 illegal sites identified and significant law enforcement achievements.

The Nigerian federal government has introduced a new initiative called “Mining Marshals” under the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to tackle illegal mining of solid minerals nationwide. The launch occurred at the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja, performed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the observance of the 2024 International Civil Defence Day. Each state command within the NSCDC will deploy its own team of mining marshals, beginning with an initial cadre of 60 personnel. Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasised the importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s resources, particularly in oil, gas, solid minerals, and telecommunications. During the event, NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Audi revealed that more than 1,175 illegal mining sites have been identified for monitoring by the new marshals. He highlighted the achievements of the NSCDC in his three years, including the dismantling of over 200 illegal refineries, the apprehension of over 500 suspected oil thieves, and the successful prosecution of 120 offenders. Additionally, Audi mentioned that the Corps’ Special Intelligence Squad recently seized eight tankers linked to the illegal trade of railway equipment valued at over 1.7 billion naira.

Illegal mining is a significant issue in Nigeria, contributing to environmental degradation and loss of government revenue. The introduction of Mining Marshals aims to reinforce enforcement against such activities while aligning with the Ministry of Solid Minerals to manage the country’s mineral resources effectively. The NSCDC has previously engaged in various operations to combat unlawful activities associated with the mining and oil sectors.

In summary, the establishment of Mining Marshals signifies a proactive approach by the Nigerian government to combat illegal mining activities. With 1,175 sites identified, the NSCDC aims to enhance national security and resource management, reflecting broader efforts to address illegal resource exploitation.
