She reminded participants of the Nigerian Mineral and Mining Act of 2007, which outlines the environmental obligations for mineral titleholders throughout all mining stages. Furthermore, Dr Ogbe reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to fostering an environment conducive to responsible mining. She mentioned the professionalisation of the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Fund (EPRF) to ensure environmental safeguards during mining operations. The emphasis was placed on active contributions from mining stakeholders towards climate change mitigation, including a shift towards renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Dr Ogbe also urged collaboration to develop climate-friendly mining technologies. Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of Mining Environmental Compliance, stressed the significance of community development agreements that ensure mining communities benefit from local development. She stated that operators are responsible for enhancing community welfare by providing essential services like clean water and electricity. Prominent figures from the Lagos mining community supported the Ministry’s stance on sustainable mining, highlighting a unified commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action.
