Federal Government Intensifies Efforts Against Illegal Mining as Economic Sabotage

The Federal Government is intensifying its efforts against illegal mining, citing it as economic sabotage. During a workshop in Ibadan, officials highlighted the negative impacts of illegal mining on revenue and investment. The Solid Mineral Special Task Force (SMSTF) was commended for its role in tackling this issue while promoting lawful mining practices and enhancing economic contributions from the solid minerals sector.

In an effort to combat illegal mining and enhance the solid mineral sector’s contribution to the economy, the Federal Government has intensified its campaign to eliminate this issue. During a recent workshop titled “Illegal Mining, An Act of Economic Sabotage,” held in Ibadan by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Engr. Ajayi Gbenga, the zonal mines officer for South West, highlighted the urgent need to tackle illegal mining due to its detrimental effects on revenue and the environment. Ajayi noted that illegal mining hampers both local and foreign investments, undermining efforts to diversify the economy under the current administration’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda. He praised the establishment of the Solid Mineral Special Task Force (SMSTF), which aims to curb illegal mining and emphasized the need for collaboration among various governmental bodies to effectively address this issue. The SMSTF is equipped with a national committee to develop strategies against illegal mining, including unscheduled inspections of hotspot areas and creating an inventory of mining sites. This workshop also aimed to educate stakeholders on the impacts of illegal mining and provide training on advanced computing models for optimising rock fragmentation. The event took place at the Federal Secretariat Complex Conference Hall in Ikoloba, Ibadan, Oyo State, demonstrating the government’s commitment to tackling this economic challenge boldly.

Illegal mining poses a significant threat to the economy by causing environmental damage and revenue losses. The solid mineral sector is essential for national economic growth, but illegal practices deter genuine investments and hinder diversification efforts. Government initiatives like the SMSTF are critical in addressing these issues and promoting lawful mining practices.

The Federal Government is taking decisive action to eradicate illegal mining, recognising its status as economic sabotage. The establishment of the SMSTF and stakeholder workshops demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the solid minerals sector and securing economic growth. Through collaboration and effective strategies, the government aims to reduce illegal mining’s adverse effects on the economy.
