The Trouble with Illegal Sand-Digging in Ughelli

The collapsing Amekpa/Affirsere bridge at the Ughelli axis of the East-West road in Delta State is in big trouble, and it’s all because of some sneaky illegal dredging going on in the Delta community. Chief Morison Olori, a big shot in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, is really worked up about this. He had a chat with the media in Ughelli and made a big fuss about it. He’s telling the big bosses in the Federal and state governments to step in and put a stop to this illegal sand-digging business in Ughelli. He’s especially calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to get the Delta State government and Ughelli North Local Government Area to stop letting people dig up sand illegally in Ughelli and all over Delta State. According to Olori, this sand-digging stuff wrecks the environment and puts the people in serious danger.

He’s got a plan, though. He’s saying that the Delta State government should start giving out licences to people who want to do this sand-digging thing, and they should do it quick. Olori is really upset that these illegal sand-diggers are digging right under the bridge and the foundations of people’s houses without thinking about the risk to the residents’ lives.
