In 2024, Nigeria faced multiple mine collapses resulting in significant casualties, primarily due to illegal and artisanal mining practices. The government and industry stakeholders are urging for urgent reforms to enhance safety regulations, improve training, and address the socio-economic challenges driving miners to illegal operations. The commitment to revitalising the sector aims to reduce risks and contribute significantly to the national economy.

In 2024, Nigeria faced a troubling series of mine collapses, which left many miners trapped and resulted in significant casualties. Key incidents occurred in Galkogo, Adamawa, and Plateau states, with at least 22 fatalities reported. The disasters have been primarily attributed to illegal and artisanal mining practices, which often disregard safety regulations and utilise outdated equipment. The Nigerian Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, indicated a lack of expertise among artisanal miners, calling for urgent reforms in the sector to enhance safety and attract investment. With President Bola Tinubu aiming for the mining sector to contribute significantly to the economy, stakeholders advocate for better regulation and compliance, training for miners, and robust emergency preparedness measures.

To mitigate future disasters, experts suggest enforcing stricter operational standards and ensuring adequate resources for regulatory bodies. The Minister has highlighted that local authorities need to increase monitoring of illegal mining activities. Encouraging cooperative formations among miners to gain legal status and access support will facilitate safer practices. However, rising poverty and out-of-school children in mining areas present ongoing challenges to safety and livelihoods. Continued efforts towards enhancing regulations, improving living conditions, and addressing illegal mining practices are critical for the sector’s sustainable growth.

The mining industry in Nigeria has been plagued by a series of safety incidents, primarily resulting from illegal mining activities that ignore essential safety practices and regulation. In 2024, the country saw several significant mine collapses, leading to fatalities and injuries among miners, highlighting the urgent need for reforms. Experts stress that improving the sector’s regulatory framework and providing proper training and resources for miners is essential for preventing further tragedies. Additionally, the government aims to revitalise this sector to make a substantial contribution to the national economy.

The recent mine collapses in Nigeria underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in the mining sector. Addressing illegal mining practices, enhancing safety regulations, and investing in regulatory bodies are essential steps for protecting miners. Stakeholders also highlight the significance of improving socio-economic conditions to reduce reliance on dangerous mining jobs. With continued governmental focus and cooperative efforts from miners, there is potential for a safer and more sustainable mining industry in Nigeria.

The first Investment Summit and Roadshow for Solid Minerals in Nigeria in Johannesburg highlighted the country’s mining potential to South African investors. Discussions focused on reforms, community agreements, and new investment platforms. Commitments were made by companies to invest in Nigeria, showcasing optimism for the sector’s growth.

The inaugural Investment Summit and Roadshow for Solid Minerals in Nigeria, organised by the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa with Rosebank Capital, showcased the country’s mining potential to South African investors. The event highlighted policy reforms, community agreements, and innovative systems aimed at revitalising the sector. Key discussions included investment incentives, the digitisation of mining license processes, and the need for local value addition in mineral processing.

Engaging sessions helped clarify misconceptions about Nigeria’s business climate. Investors raised concerns over policy fluctuations, which were addressed by showcasing the amendment process for the Nigeria Minerals And Mining Act (2007). This aims to solidify reforms and improve the investment framework. The revised Community Development Agreements (CDAs) were also introduced to ensure host community consent for mining operations, fostering better relationships.

The Nigeria Mineral Decision Support System (NMDSS) emerged as a pivotal tool to attract investors, providing comprehensive data for informed decisions without necessitating travel. President Bola Tinubu’s promise of “Easy In, Easy Out” regarding profit repatriation, paired with tax waivers for mining equipment imports, further appealed to investors. Dr. Dele Alake emphasised the importance of local processing and skill transfer to boost Nigeria’s GDP.

Improvements in the mining license application process through the Electronic Mining Cadastral System (EMC+) were presented as a significant leap forward. Additionally, potential collaborative programmes were discussed for mutual certification of mining professionals between Nigeria and South Africa.

The summit was marked by several commitments, including interest from Pilanesberg Platinum Mines to explore similar initiatives in Nigeria and an MOU for a $1 billion coal processing and power plant project in Enugu State. Crystal Partners also expressed intentions to collaborate with Nigeria’s mining sector. Overall, the Roadshow was deemed a success, signalling a promising future for Nigeria’s solid minerals sector under proactive leadership.

The focus of this article is the recent Investment Summit and Roadshow for Solid Minerals held in Johannesburg, South Africa, which served as a platform to present Nigeria’s mining sector potential to international investors. It highlighted ongoing reforms and initiatives aimed at transforming the mining industry and establishing Nigeria as a favourable destination for mining investments. The Nigerian delegation engaged investors through presentations, discussions on policies, and innovative systems designed to ease the investment process and enhance community relations.

In summary, the Investment Summit and Roadshow successfully showcased Nigeria’s mining potential, addressing investor concerns about policies and community engagement. Promises of improved processes, attractive incentives, and the commitment to local value addition were well received. Key partnerships and initiatives were formed, indicating a proactive approach to investing in Nigeria’s mining sector, suggesting a bright future under effective leadership.

Titan Minerals Nigeria is spearheading mineral exploration in Nigeria with projects focused on lithium, gold, and tin. CEO Fadi Abou Ghazale emphasizes the need for Nigeria to attract foreign investment to enhance its mining sector. With advanced equipment and ongoing collaborations, the company aims to establish Nigeria as a global mining hub, particularly leveraging its relative stability compared to neighbouring regions.

Mr. Fadi Abou Ghazale, CEO of Titan Minerals Nigeria, highlights the company’s robust operations in the mineral exploration sector during the Nigeria Mining Week 2024. Titan Minerals is currently engaged in significant projects focused on lithium, gold, and tin, particularly in the Jos and Suleja regions. Ghazale emphasizes the need for Nigeria to attract foreign investment to enhance its mining capabilities and mentions the rising global demand for minerals, especially gold and lithium.

Titan Minerals is investing in state-of-the-art mining equipment to improve project execution and includes extensive drilling operations across multiple states. Their ongoing collaboration with international companies on AIM and the Toronto Stock Exchange reflects the growing interest in Nigeria’s mineral potential. Ghazale asserts that Nigeria should leverage its relative stability, as neighboring countries face security issues, to emerge as a favourable destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in minerals.

The Nigerian mining sector is in a pivotal state, with potential for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to develop its rich mineral resources. Currently, the focus on minerals such as gold and lithium is intensified by their increasing global demand. Titan Minerals Nigeria, a notable player in this sector, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s position in global mining through advanced exploration and equipment acquisition, while also addressing the need for strategic investments to facilitate this growth.

To elevate its mining sector, Nigeria must aggressively pursue foreign direct investment and foster junior exploration companies. The focus on high-demand minerals like gold and lithium presents a favourable opportunity if the country capitalizes on its stability relative to its neighbours. By enhancing project execution capabilities and international partnerships, Nigeria has the potential to become a global mining destination, appealing to investors seeking opportunities in the mineral market.
