The agreement outlines specific collaboration areas and aims to strengthen the mining industries of both nations with a focus on innovation and capacity building.

Nigeria and South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the mining sector, with a focus on investment, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer. This agreement was formalised in Abuja by Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, and South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Gwede Mantashe.

Under the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission, the MoU outlines specific collaboration areas and schedules for joint activities in mining. It aims to foster ongoing discussions to enhance intra-African trade and implement practical strategies.

Key initiatives include capacity building in advanced geological methods, the use of UAVs, and spectral remote sensing for mineral exploration. Additional efforts will involve sharing geoscientific data, training in mineral processing, and enhancing value addition.

The MoU also encompasses capacity building in elemental fingerprinting using LA-ICP-MS and joint exploration of mineral resources in Nigeria. Alake highlights the agreement’s potential to drive industrialisation, job creation, and sustainable economic growth across Africa.

He asserts that the collaboration will promote knowledge exchange and investment while benefiting from South Africa’s technology to diversify Nigeria’s economy and attract investments for long-term stability.

The Nigeria-South Africa mining cooperation agreement marks a significant step towards strengthening ties in the mining industry. By focusing on knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and investment, both countries aim to bolster their mining sectors and stimulate economic growth. Key collaborative areas include advanced geological methods, training, and joint exploration, highlighting the potential for mutual benefits in the long run.

Nigeria and South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance mining cooperation. The agreement aims to facilitate technology exchange, exploration of minerals, and economic integration. Both countries are optimistic about the partnership’s potential to create jobs and foster sustainable development in Africa.

Nigeria and South Africa have forged stronger economic ties through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on mining development. This agreement, resulting from the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission led by Presidents Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Cyril Ramaphosa, aims to enhance collaboration on solid minerals exploration, technology sharing, and industrial progress.

During a bilateral meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, and South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, H.E. Gwede Mantashe, formalized the agreement. Dr. Alake referred to the signing as a pivotal moment for both nations, set to unlock Africa’s mineral potential and foster regional integration.

Alake stated, “The Memorandum of Understanding in geology, mining, and mineral processing signed today… will serve as a cornerstone for facilitating knowledge and technology transfer.” He stressed the importance of deeper mining cooperation, which could lead to industrialization, job creation, and sustainable development.

Mantashe praised Nigeria’s commitment to mining, expressing South Africa’s intent to collaborate closely. He noted, “This partnership allows us to share knowledge and pursue practical, mutually beneficial projects.” The MoU encompasses areas such as geological mapping, training in mineral processing, and geoscientific data exchange through the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency.

Both ministers believe this agreement will enhance their nations’ mining sectors, boost intra-African trade, and support economic integration. They pledged to ensure the implementation of the MoU is effective and timely, furthering the shared ambitions of both countries.

The MoU between Nigeria and South Africa marks a significant advancement in their mining collaboration, promising mutual benefits through knowledge sharing and resource management. This initiative aims to strengthen economic ties, enhance the mining sector, and promote sustainable development across the continent. Both nations are committed to its successful implementation, reflecting their strategic partnership for industrial growth.
