The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development promotes environmentally sustainable mining practices in Nigeria, urging stakeholders to adopt strategies that mitigate climate change and uphold community development agreements. A recent workshop reinforced these initiatives, highlighting the need for responsible mining and collaboration among industry players.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has reiterated its focus on environmentally responsible mining in Nigeria. During a workshop on environmental obligations for mineral title holders held on October 22, 2024, representatives highlighted the sector’s vital role in addressing climate change. Stakeholders were urged to implement sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impacts and foster economic growth.

Mary Ogbe, the Permanent Secretary, represented by Nwamaka Odili, underscored the Nigerian Mineral and Mining Act of 2007, which specifies environmental responsibilities for mineral title holders throughout all mining phases. Ogbe emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting responsible mining practices and the professionalization of the Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Fund (EPRF) to safeguard the environment.

She stressed the necessity for stakeholders to mitigate climate change impacts through sustainable practices and a transition to renewable energy sources. The Ministry aims to back research into environmentally friendly mining technologies, appealing to participants to unite in these efforts.

Vivian Okono, Director of Mining Environmental Compliance, called for collective measures to address climate change in mining. She echoed the Permanent Secretary’s plea for eco-friendly practices while also highlighting the significance of community development agreements, which ensure local benefits from mining activities. Operators are expected to contribute to local welfare projects, such as clean water and electricity.

The workshop featured messages from key stakeholders, including local leaders and environmental committees, affirming their support for responsible mining. Discussions centred on climate change impacts, community development, environmental compliance, and the EPRF’s professionalization. Stakeholders collaborated to explore strategies that enhance the mining sector’s contribution to sustainable development.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development is proactively advocating for sustainable mining practices to combat climate change and fulfil community obligations. The recent workshop reinforced key messages about environmental responsibilities and the need for collaborative efforts within the sector to ensure both ecological preservation and social development. Stakeholder commitment and adherence to mining laws will be critical to achieving these goals.
