Nigeria and South Africa have signed an MoU to enhance mining cooperation focusing on investment, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange. The agreement aims to strengthen ties under the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission and outlines specific collaborative areas for joint activities. Ministers believe this partnership will boost both countries’ mining sectors, enhance intra-African trade, and contribute to sustainable economic development.

Nigeria and South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing mining cooperation. The agreement, signed by Nigeria’s Solid Minerals Development Minister, Mr Dele Alake, and South Africa’s Mineral Resources Minister, Mr Gwede Mantashe, focuses on investment, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer. This collaboration arises from efforts to strengthen ties under the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission framework.

The MoU details specific collaboration areas with set timelines for joint activities within the mining sector. Both ministers vowed to enhance intra-African trade and take actionable steps as outlined in the agreement. They expressed optimism that this partnership would substantially benefit both countries’ mining industries through shared expertise and innovation.

Key initiatives include capacity building in geological methods using UAVs, spectral remote sensing technologies for mineral exploration, and joint training in mineral processing. The MoU also advocates for effective geoscientific data sharing and exploration of agro and energy minerals within Nigeria, aiming to advance regional integration.

Mr Alake highlighted the potential for industrialisation, job creation, and sustainable development in Africa through this bilateral cooperation. He reiterated that Nigeria intends to develop its mining sector, leveraging South Africa’s technological expertise to attract investments and diversify its economy for long-term growth.

Mr Mantashe praised the agreement and its significance for South Africa, emphasizing the importance of strengthened cooperation between the two nations.

The signing of the MoU between Nigeria and South Africa marks a significant step towards enhancing mining sector cooperation. By focusing on investment, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange, both countries aim to improve their mining industries. This partnership highlights the potential for increased intra-African trade and economic development, paving the way for mutual benefits through collaboration.
