Nigeria and South Africa have signed an MoU to enhance cooperation in the mining sector, focusing on capacity building and technology sharing. This partnership, fostered by their Bi-National Commission, aims to leverage Nigeria’s mineral wealth and South Africa’s mining expertise for mutual economic benefits.

Nigeria and South Africa have furthered their mining partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a bilateral meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, and South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, H.E. Gwede Mantashe. This collaboration aims to enhance bilateral relations and focus on the vital mining sector, presenting opportunities for industrialisation and sustainable growth across Africa.

The MoU covers several aspects, including:
– Capacity building in geological applications using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
– Utilisation of Multi- and Hyper-spectral Remote Sensing Technologies for mineral exploration.
– Sharing of geoscientific data via the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA).
– Training on mineral processing and value addition.
– Exploration of agro and energy minerals in Nigeria.

Alake expressed that Nigeria’s wealth in minerals can benefit from South Africa’s mining expertise, paving the way for investment and skills development. Meanwhile, Mantashe noted that South Africa can gain significantly from Nigeria’s renewed interest in its mining sector.

The renewed partnership between Nigeria and South Africa through the MoU signing reaffirms their commitment to economic cooperation in mining. By focusing on knowledge transfer, technology sharing, and capacity building, both nations aim to enhance their mining sectors, boost intra-African trade, and ultimately drive sustainable growth and job creation across the continent.
