The FEC has granted approval for a N2.5 billion satellite system to monitor illegal mining in Nigeria. Minister Dele Alake revealed plans for real-time oversight of mining activities and the implementation of both persuasive and coercive measures to address illegal operations. Over 300 cooperatives have been formed to aid legal mining, while enforcement actions target non-compliant miners.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the acquisition of a N2.5 billion satellite surveillance system aimed at tackling illegal mining activities nationwide. Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced this decision after a recent FEC meeting, detailing that the technology will enhance monitoring and regulation of mining operations, limiting revenue losses and tracking unauthorized mineral extraction.

Alake explained that the satellite system will be integrated across strategic locations, providing real-time visual access to mining sites. Authorities will be able to instantly evaluate the volume of minerals extracted and monitor truck movements and security conditions at those sites.

The government is pursuing a dual strategy to combat illegal mining: persuasive and coercive measures. By promoting the formation of cooperatives among artisanal miners, the government aids them in operating legally, accessing financial resources, and contributing to national revenue. Currently, over 300 mining cooperatives have been established.

In contrast, illegal miners who resist compliance face strict enforcement through Mining Marshalls. Alake noted the prosecution and conviction of several illegal miners, including foreign nationals. Additionally, allegations have emerged from Edo State’s former Governor Adams Oshiomole, claiming involvement of retired military figures in illegal mining, urging government action akin to that against oil bunkers.

The FEC’s investment in satellite surveillance is a significant step towards regulating the mining sector in Nigeria. By combining cooperative initiatives with rigorous enforcement, the government aims to mitigate illegal activities while enhancing revenue collection. The ongoing allegations regarding influential figures in illegal mining highlight the need for continued scrutiny in this domain.
