Nigeria and South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance mining cooperation, focusing on investment, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange. The agreement outlines specific collaboration areas and aims to strengthen the mining industries of both nations with a focus on innovation and capacity building.

Nigeria and South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the mining sector, with a focus on investment, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer. This agreement was formalised in Abuja by Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, and South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Mr Gwede Mantashe.

Under the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission, the MoU outlines specific collaboration areas and schedules for joint activities in mining. It aims to foster ongoing discussions to enhance intra-African trade and implement practical strategies.

Key initiatives include capacity building in advanced geological methods, the use of UAVs, and spectral remote sensing for mineral exploration. Additional efforts will involve sharing geoscientific data, training in mineral processing, and enhancing value addition.

The MoU also encompasses capacity building in elemental fingerprinting using LA-ICP-MS and joint exploration of mineral resources in Nigeria. Alake highlights the agreement’s potential to drive industrialisation, job creation, and sustainable economic growth across Africa.

He asserts that the collaboration will promote knowledge exchange and investment while benefiting from South Africa’s technology to diversify Nigeria’s economy and attract investments for long-term stability.

The Nigeria-South Africa mining cooperation agreement marks a significant step towards strengthening ties in the mining industry. By focusing on knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and investment, both countries aim to bolster their mining sectors and stimulate economic growth. Key collaborative areas include advanced geological methods, training, and joint exploration, highlighting the potential for mutual benefits in the long run.
