Nigeria’s FEC has approved 11 new private universities and allocated N2.5 billion for satellite monitoring of mining activities. This initiative aims to expand the education sector and control illegal mining that harms natural resources. A further N1.9 billion was allocated for insurance on vital aviation infrastructure.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Nigeria has approved the establishment of 11 new private universities to enhance the country’s higher education sector. This decision aims to provide more academic opportunities for students while addressing issues within the solid minerals industry. Additionally, the FEC allocated N2.5 billion for satellite technology to monitor mining activities across Nigeria, targeting illegal operations that threaten natural resources.

During the meeting led by President Bola Tinubu, Minister for Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, emphasised the need for monitoring technologies to curb the extensive losses due to illegal mining. He expressed concerns over unregulated mining and reiterated that, despite states owning land, the Federal Government retains rights to the minerals beneath it, highlighting ongoing regulatory struggles.

The newly approved private universities include:
1. New City University, Ogun State
2. University of Fortune, Ondo State
3. Eranova University, Osun State
4. Minaret University, Osun State
5. Abubakar Toyin University, Kwara State
6. Southern Atlantic University, Akwa Ibom State
7. Lens University, Kwara State
8. Monarch University, Ogun State
9. Tonnie Iredia University of Communication, Benin City
10. Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management, Lagos
11. Kevin Eze University, Enugu State
This initiative aims to bolster educational growth and diversify academic disciplines in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the FEC has approved N1.9 billion for an insurance policy to protect crucial public assets, particularly in the aviation sector. Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, stated these funds would secure airports and essential infrastructure to ensure their safety and operational readiness, demonstrating the government’s commitment to safeguarding national assets.

The recent approvals by the FEC reflect Nigeria’s commitment to expanding higher education through new private universities and improving resource management in the mining sector with advanced monitoring technologies. Additionally, securing key infrastructure in aviation demonstrates proactive governance aimed at enhancing national development.
