Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has launched new mining equipment and announced the acquisition of 15 mining licenses to enhance the state’s mining sector. This initiative aims to utilise Kogi’s rich mineral deposits, create jobs, and reduce dependency on federal funds, marking a new phase in economic development.

Kogi State’s Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has introduced new mining equipment at a ceremony in Lokoja. He also announced that the state secured 15 mining licenses, which will enhance Kogi’s solid minerals development and mark a significant economic transformation for the state. The acquisition of the licenses signals Kogi’s entry into the competitive landscape of solid mineral exploitation.

The governor highlighted Kogi’s abundant mineral resources, including gold, lithium, limestone, and coal, which have largely remained untapped. He stated, “This is a strategic move to harness our natural resources and reduce our reliance on federal allocations.” The governor reiterated that the licenses would enable large-scale exploration and boost sustainable economic growth.

Ododo affirmed the state’s commitment to job creation and improving livelihoods through mining activities. He mentioned that the new equipment would enhance resource extraction efficiency. Furthermore, he stressed Kogi’s ambition to be a significant contributor to Nigeria’s mining industry, advocating for self-sufficiency in revenue generation beyond federal support.

Engr. Bashiru Gegu, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, outlined the vision for the mining sector as crucial for revenue. He emphasised the importance of robust policies and appropriate equipment to effectively engage in solid mineral development, stating that “Being a major player in the mining sector requires equipment, laws, and policies.”

Governor Ododo’s unveiling of new mining equipment and the acquisition of 15 mining licenses represents a pivotal step for Kogi State’s economic development. By tapping into its rich mineral resources, the state aims to reduce reliance on federal allocations, create jobs, and establish itself as a leader in Nigeria’s mining sector. The commitment to sustainable practices and development is poised to significantly benefit the state’s economy.
