Nigeria has approved a satellite surveillance system to enhance mining safety, enabling swift interventions during emergencies. The system will also include spectrophotometers for monitoring mining operations, combating illegal mining, and creating a mineral map of Nigeria for better resource management.

The Nigerian government has approved a satellite surveillance system to enhance mining safety, enabling quick intervention during mine collapses. This system will feature spectrophotometers for monitoring operations accurately and ensuring material transparency.

Dr. Olugbenga Oyewole of MilkyWay Visuals Limited, which manages the system’s installation, stated that it will supply essential data on mining site stability. Immediate alerts will facilitate prompt evacuations during emergencies. The integration of spectrophotometers will help in identifying materials being transported in the industry.

This technology aims to curb illegal mining by implementing an electronic reporting platform for accurate tracking of minerals. Initially, the satellite will create a comprehensive mineral map of Nigeria, overlaying mining licenses to identify unauthorized activities.

As the satellite monitors illegal mining, it will highlight mining activities occurring outside licensed zones. An electronic platform will also require miners to report their extracted materials and generate QR codes for traceability, allowing customs to verify compliance.

RFID-tagged ID cards will be issued to miners for identification within authorized areas. The technology will also assist in identifying rare earth elements in Nigeria, with plans discussed for establishing mineral refineries, including a potential gold refinery.

Dr. Oyewole praised the Minister of Solid Minerals Development for adopting geospatial technology, signifying a turning point in resource management. This innovative integration positions Nigeria to lead in mining operations, potentially creating a model for Africa.

The introduction of satellite surveillance and advanced monitoring tools in Nigeria’s mining sector aims to improve safety, transparency, and efficiency. By accurately tracking mining activities and materials, the government seeks to combat illegal mining while positioning Nigeria as a leader in mining innovation on the African continent.
