A Nigerian court has ordered the deportation of four Chinese nationals for illegal mining activities in Plateau State. These individuals were convicted of unlawfully possessing and purchasing minerals, with a total forfeiture of ₦134 million ordered. Governor Mutfwang’s Executive Order 001 aims to curb further illegal mining in the area.

In a significant ruling, a Nigerian court has ordered the deportation of four Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining operations in Plateau State. The Federal High Court in Jos found these individuals guilty of unlawfully acquiring and possessing mineral resources. The outcome? A court mandated that all proceeds from their illegal activities be forfeited, including more than ₦134 million.

The Chinese nationals—Liang Quin Yong, Wang Huajie, Zhong Jiajing, and Long Kechong—were arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) back on March 9, 2025. This came after authorities received credible tips about Chinese individuals suspected of illegal mining in the area. Justice Agishi was firm in her ruling, sentencing each of them to five years imprisonment, or a ₦1 million fine at their option. But there’s a catch: they’ve also been banned from re-entering Nigeria.

In addition to the prison term or fine, the court ordered the seizure of all assets tied to their illegal mining ventures. This included the hefty amount recovered from Liang Quin Yong, totalling ₦134.87 million. An administrative fine of ₦16.3 million was also imposed on the defendants. This fine resulted from their failure to report a financial transaction to the EFCC’s Special Control Unit against Money Laundering within the stipulated seven-day period.

Plateau State is rich in mineral resources, which makes illegal mining a significant issue. Historically, tin and columbite have been key minerals extracted from this region. Recent reports indicate the area also has important deposits of tantalite, wolfram, lead, iron ore, and even gold and silver near Shendam. But despite this wealth, illegal mining has long plagued the state, with many operators acting without licenses, often leaving a path of environmental destruction in their wake.

The ongoing trend of illegal mining has raised serious concerns, tearing at the fabric of local communities and fuelling insecurity. Many foreign nationals have been implicated, further complicating the situation. To combat these escalating issues, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has taken decisive action by signing Executive Order 001. This prohibits all mining activities throughout Plateau State, a move aimed to regain control over its mineral resources.

What this situation reveals is a broader struggle over the control and exploitation of Nigeria’s rich natural resources. With increased efforts from authorities to clamp down on illegal operations, it appears there’s a long road ahead in preserving both the environment and the autonomy of local communities against external exploitation.

In summary, the court ruling marks a pivotal move against illegal mining in Plateau State, highlighting both the legal and environmental challenges faced in Nigeria’s mining sector. The significant penalties imposed, alongside the government’s executive order, reflect a determination to restore regulation and protect local resources. The case opens up questions about the future of mining in the region and the fight against illegal operations.
